In its latest report for 2021 which covered trends during the third quarter, the ESMA presented that while the economic outlook improved in the third quarter as Covid 19 vaccination programs accelerated across the bloc, the regulator noted that the speed of recovery differs across member states, and that uncertainty and risks remain high in the fourth quarter. ESMA added that the outlook for inflation has been revised upwards given rising energy and commodity prices and supply chain shortages. In terms of the interest rate environment, it said that the low interest rate environment reinforced the risk-taking behavior of investors which contributed to keeping valuations at elevated levels. Thus, it highlighted the continued risk of price corrections and an abrupt shift in risk premia.

UK Regulators Launch Derivatives Reporting Consultation

The Bank of England has launched a consultation on the application of European rules covering trade reporting and the companies that house that data. The consultation is conducted with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the primary proposal relates to amendments to the framework under the UK version of the European Markets Infrastructure Regulation (UK EMIR). The FCA is proposing amendments to the registration process for trade repositories (TRs), and reviewing requirements on those companies. “The US, Singapore and Australia are all in the process of consulting on their derivatives reporting regimes to align with international guidance for derivatives reporting. Our proposals in these areas are therefore not only predominantly in line with the changes made in the EU but also other G20 jurisdictions,” the Bank of England consultation said.
